If I Were An Angel

If I were an angel
I would tie my hair
With ribbons made of rainbows
Pulled from out the air.

If I were an angel
My cymbals would resound
With a thousand symphonies
That mortals would astound.

If I were an angel
My shadows would be art
By Rembrandt or Picasso
Or Da Vinci or Degas.

If I were an angel
I would be a flower
Stolen by a lover
From a midnight bower.

If I were an angel
I would be the moon
Sweeter than a drop of joy
On a sugar spoon.

If I were an angel
I'd sit by a black hole
Dangling in my feet
To tickle my soul.

If I were an angel
With wings as white as dove
My only little labour
Would be to herald Love.

I'd be its little messenger
Each place it entered earth
A simple golden bugle
Proclaiming all my worth.

If I were an angel
I would herald Love
Every place it entered earth
From out of heaven above.

Yes, if I were an angel
I would surely be
All that in Creation was
Known by name, Beauty.
