Riddle Poems

My Mum

If you would hold my hand and help me see
The colours of the world, the flowers too
If you would smile and show me this or that
Or share a startled moment, one or two
Or make a sentence from my broken words
Or make a story from my shattered dreams
If you'd look into my eyes and say my name
Or glance at me with half of one sweet smile
Or orbiting my world, be face to face
To place a gentle thumb upon my cheek
And mean by this that there could hardly be
A better place right now than You and Me.
If you could sneeze for me when I am sick
Or make a puppet laugh upon a stick
Or drag me by my feet across the bed
To scoop me up when I have lost my head
And hold me closest when the night is dear
Then whisper something lovely in my ear
Like tell me of the world you used to know
Explaining why the moon is called the moon
And why the stars are scattered where they are
And who is God, and where is God, and why
He chose to make His home so far away
And if he wanted could he visit us?
And when I'm losing show me I'm a king
And fly with me upon this broken wing
And read to me though I have gone to sleep
And wrap your arms around me when I cry
And call to me when I am in a crowd
And say the name of Love to me out loud
And boost me to the moon when I am down
And boast about me to your every friend
And cook for me with mine my favourite meal
And turn my world upright when all has failed
And kiss me on the edges of my ear
And make a piece of paper disappear
Then all will be the best beneath the sun
And even more than this - you'll be my mum.
