Threshing Girl

Once I found a threshing girl
Crying tears on threshing floor
Like elemental pouring
From a sudden summer storm
I heard her heartache break like thunder
A tiny husk split asunder
Felt her grief strike like lightening
From all Heaven down to the earth
The human heart, so frail and frightening
To see a woven soul, no worth.

Then through the storm, I heard her sing
Like fledge to breeze on broken wing
A carnal whisper more than song
Inaudible to all but one:

'No star from a-far
Shines quite like you.
How could it do?
How could it do?
Your light was new.

No star in the night
Shines half as bright
How could it do?
How could it do?
Your light was new.

Once I thought I heard the heavens calling
Then I saw, just the raining...
falling...
falling...
falling...

No star from a-far
Shines quite like you.
How could it do?
How could it do?
Your light was new.

Like a magic melody
It's a mystery to me
Why you're the one and only one
Whose smile could make me cry
Just like a lullaby
Remember once those smiles for free
Now my life for one from thee.'

Now love and life and loss are common
But moved I was by this girl's sorrow
So breathed a breath of heat and heart
And blew into that charcoal hearth:

When you wake upon the morn
Your mother's love will be reborn
You'll gaze upon your child's face
With tears dried without a trace
Not only this, but on the morrow
No memory of injured sorrow.

For every seed of trodden grain
Drowned in drop of summer rain
Another field of wheat may sow
So other souls your joy will know
When gazing on their favoured face
May each of them enjoy God's grace.
