Cathedral mouse

Once there was a mouse that lived among the pews of an old cathedral. The cathedral sprang up like a fountain of stone and coloured light, sounding its bells every day, but the mouse could not make head nor tail of them.
‘Cathedral!’, said the mouse ‘I know that your words are bells
But I do not know what they mean.’
So the cathedral chimed more slowly, in order that the mouse could understand them:
Hope is the belief in love
Goodness the desire for love
Imagination the search for love
Passion the pursuit of love
Peace the knowledge of love
Wisdom the understanding of love
Faith the certainty of love
Truth the way of love
Joy the anticipation of love
Beauty the promise of love
Sorrow the loss of love
Grace the gift of love
…
And so on…
And the cathedral mouse went away
Happy as it had ever been.
