What is Love?

Boat and the lighthouse

Now once there was a boat
Who poured out its grief to the waves:
‘I did not ask for this!’ It said
‘I do not approve of this
I do not agree with this
I do not accept this
Yet I acknowledge it is happening!’
A lighthouse replied:
Love is a lighthouse
Be ready, little boat
To go where your presence blesses others.
‘Alas!’, said the boat, ‘My sin was this:
I closed my ears
That I could not hear myself cry
I closed my eyes
That I could not see my shame
I closed my heart
That I could not tell it was mine.’
The lighthouse shone its light directly on the boat:
Do you really think
God who opened hell
Cannot open you?
‘Alas!’, cried the boat ‘All this water!’
‘Are these sins really mine?’
Be ready little boat, said the lighthouse
To go where your presence blesses others
When a soul confesses its sins
It gets as many answers
As quiet listeners.
