What is Love?

Vincent

Once there was a ragged man who walked into a bar. His clothes were torn and everyone could see that he had not eaten for many days.
‘What happened to you?’, they said. ‘Tell us and we will buy you a drink.’
‘I stood at a cross-roads, said the man, when I noticed a lamp lying on the floor. I knew well what it was, and what to do, for I realised at once that it was a magic lamp. I rubbed it once, but nothing happened. I rubbed it twice, but everything was just the same. On the third time a genie appeared.
“You have released me from my bottle” he said, “I grant you one wish.”
“One wish!”, said I, “But I was expecting three!”
Now this was my first lesson. Never argue with a genie, for I saw straight away that I had been turned into a frog.
“Well”, I croaked, “If I have one wish, then I wish I were in love. Though now that I think about it, I would also like to be an artist. Mind you, now that I speak such things out loud, I have always dreamed of being a genius, because then I would really be someone.”
“Your wish is granted”, said the genie.
“Which one?”, said I.
“Since you cannot have one without the other two, you have made only one wish.”
And with that the genie vanished, as genii do, leaving me standing at the cross-roads, holding nothing but an ordinary paintbrush in my hand.’
Everyone in the bar was astonished to hear the tale, but saw that it was true. Indeed, they saw that the ragged man was exactly who God had made him.
